Thankful for Rain

This morning, I woke up to the delightful pitter patter of rain drops falling on my roof.  It is a known fact that for many people, rainy days are dreary, troublesome, and undesirable. However, for me, gentle rain showers are viewed as peaceful, serene, and comforting. And, I view rain storms as majestic, powerful, and inspiring.  Perhaps this perspective comes from my happy childhood memories of trying to outrun the approaching showers with my siblings, or from sitting under our porch while enjoying the cool breeze.  Perhaps it is because I love nature. Regardless of exactly why, I do feel a sense of calm during rain, as if I am being drawn to God through the rain.  Today, as I reflect on what God is currently doing in my life, I am reminded that while rain does hinder outdoor activities, can be troublesome when trying to go to work or travel, and can make us feel cold and damp, rain is most often a blessing from God.  Just as rain is necessary to water and cleanses the Earth and air, our souls also need regular cleansing and refreshment.

Just as water cleanse our physical bodies, Scripture tells us that God’s Word is able to cleanse and sanctify us as we spend time within it (Ephesians 5:26).  The book of Acts tells us that rain is a symbol of blessing, as it says, “Nevertheless he (God) left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17, KJV).

While I do not know your personal feelings about rainy days nor do I know what you are currently walking through in life, I encourage you to consider the spiritual lesson we can learn through this natural occurrence. The next time you experience a rain shower, let it serve to remind you of God’s power and blessing and take the opportunity to ask/allow Him to do His cleansing work within you.

May God’s Word cleanse and refresh us for His glory and our good.
